anto Domingo - Cultural Capital of the Americas 2010

The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals (www.ibocc.org) has chosen Santo Domingo to be the cultural capital of the Americas for 2010. The official celebration by the Ministry of Culture began with a painting exhibition by the master Columbian painter Fernando Botero and is continuing with the group exhibit Intimidad de la memoria at the National Gallery of Fine Arts.

Every Work of Art is Memory

The pieces that make up the art show include paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas, mixed media in two and three dimension, photography and installations. They comprise a diverse set of expressions and techniques that reflect cultural, social and political diversity due to what these artists have been exposed in their countries and abroad.

In the documentation included in the catalog of the exhibition, the organizers expressed their ideas behind Intimidad de la memoria: Every work of art is memory and all memory is an act of intimacy. Each artist in this exhibition has a selection of works that best express their artistic and social relationship to the intimate aspect of memory as a space for reflection of being. The human being, and the multiplicity of their emotional realities, is regulated by a host of memories that will determine experiential wisdom. Registered memory in the mental mapping of each being is associated, imperatively and naturally, to the demands of reality that surrounds him.

Our wish is to explore the most intimate and primal parts of our memories, the part that melts into the mystery of the creative process. Common ground is created through the most profound and hidden in our memories. We try to go beyond the Dominicans, of the Caribbean, the Latin, the "American" to accommodate most universal elements of the self and its cultural manifestations.

Note from curator on the work of Anki King:

Anki King's participation in this show is important as her current work relates conceptually and visually with the theme of the exhibit: Intimacy of Memory. Her subject matter proposes a reflective interaction between her work and the viewer about bodily presence and the soul affection. The dialogue resulting from this relationship enriches the intimacy of each subject’s reflection on their memories and their connection to their personal experiences.

The following paintings by Anki King will be exhibited:

Leaners
Lullaby I, II, II
